THE PHILOSOPHY
Tropical Hummingbird
Tropical Hummingbird stems from a need for a plastic free, clean world. The constant disregard of the planet by major clothing and consumer goods companies motivated the shop owner, Sara, to source and sell products that are environmentally safe.
Our shop’s focus is on products that are natural, biodegradable and sustainably sourced. This applies to all facets of our little shop including purchase, transportation, packaging and final retail. The BEST bit is the cost savings of our business model. By removing middlemen and using surface mail, we save a tonne on CO2 and transportation costs. This financial saving is passed onto you, our customers. Premium quality products at affordable prices. Quality yarn accessible to all.
At Tropical Hummingbird we focus on maintaining a clean planet so that the smallest of creatures like bees and hummingbirds can not only live but thrive. Hence the name, Tropical Hummingbird.

We offer 100% wool and alpaca yarns that are completely natural and biodegradable. Our yarns will not leave a negative environmental footprint.
Most yarns today are blended with manmade materials like nylons and acrylic. These synthetic materials release microplastics through normal wear. This results in our closed home environments hubs of breathable plastics. During washing, the microplastics poison the waterways and harm wildlife. Finally, plastics take hundreds of years to breakdown. This is not the world the founder and owner of TM, Sara, sees for herself or future generations.
Tropical Hummingbird’s core values and motto focuses on a biodiverse, clean and sustainable Earth.
Living life to the maximum with a minimum environmental footprint.

ABOUT THE OWNER ~ SARA
Hello Crafting Community, I am Sara. I have a passion for knitting and all things natural. This online shop has been a result of my passion for knitting and crocheting since I was a little girl. I first started knitting at the age of 8. I learned to knit with my grandmother. As she taught me through practice, this was very simple knitting. I had to learn to read patterns later in life. I was an educator for nearly 20 years. After leaving the education industry, I decided to start my own business of pure premium yarns. As a salaried person, most pure animal fibre yarns were unaffordable for me. This made me do something about it. This was the basis for starting Tropical Hummingbird. An all natural store that sells yarn to the average person. A combination of good quality and affordability. I searched for manufacturers who would work with a small retailer like myself and produce to my small order quantities. This cut out the middleman and helps to keep my prices low. I love animals. I am a regular contributor to Cats Protection’s local branch in Wirral. Currently I am knitting blankets for RSPCA (https://www.rspca.org.uk/) after they put out an appeal on the BBC. Another favourite charity is Cats Protection (https://www.cats.org.uk/). Kind regards, Sara.
